Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology
University of Sheffield
William Parker is National Institute of Health & Care Research Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology at the University of Sheffield, UK. He qualified in Medicine and Pharmacology from the University of Cambridge before completing Foundation and Core Medical Training in his home city of Sheffield. He then took the opportunity to complete six years as a research fellow under the supervision of Professor Rob Storey at the University of Sheffield, training in laboratory techniques and clinical trial design relating to antiplatelet pharmacology. This included a 3-year British Heart Foundation Clinical Training Research Fellowship leading to the award of a PhD. He was appointed Clinical Lecturer in January 2022.
In addition, he is a Principal Editor and incoming Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal 'Platelets', Vice Co-ordinator and incoming Co-ordinator of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Young Thrombosis Researchers’ Group, and sits on the ESC Board Committee for Young Cardiovascular Professionals.
His research interests and publications span the field of atherothrombosis but centre on the dose-dependent effects of aspirin on the thrombotic and inflammatory responses. This includes the ongoing ‘WILLOW’ programme of clinical drug trials seeking to explore and optimise combination antithrombotic regimens for aspirin-treated patients with high-risk coronary syndromes. Sitting alongside these academic activities is a clinical interest in the management and prevention of coronary artery disease. Distinctions have included a high commendation from the International Aspirin Foundation in 2021 and ranking as the top candidate in the UK during cardiology clinical training applications.
