Background: CoagulopathyandthromboemboliceventsareamongthecomplicationsofCoronaVirus disease2019(COVID-19).Abnormal coagulation parameters in COVID-19patientsare important prognostic factors of disease severity

Aims: To analyze coagulation profilesofhospitalizedCOVID-19patientsin Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Horn of Africa.

Methods: Thisprospectivecross-sectionalstudywasconductedamong455Covid-19patientsadmittedatMillenniumCOVID 19careandtreatmentcenter,AddisAbaba,EthiopiafromJuly1-October23,2020.ProthrombinTime(PT),Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time(APTT) and Internationalnormalizedratio(INR)weredeterminedonHUMACLOTDUEPLUS®coagulationanalyzer(Wiesbaden,Germany).Inallstatisticalanalysisofresults,p < 0.05 wasdefinedasstatisticallysignificant.

Results: Aprolongedprothrombintimewasfoundin 46.8%ofstudyparticipantswithCOVID-19and aprolongedprothrombintimeandelevatedINRin 53.3%ofstudysubjectswithsevereand51%ofcriticallyCOVIDpatients.Thrombocytopeniawasdetectedin 22.1%ofCOVID-19 patients.50.5%and51.3%ofCOVID-19patientsolderthan55yearshadthrombocytopeniaandprolongedAPTTrespectively

Conclusion(s): Inthisstudy,prolongedprothrombintimeandelevatedINRweredetectedinmorethan50% ofsevereandcriticalCOVID-19patients.ThrombocytopeniaandprolongedAPTTweredominantin COVID-19patientsolderthan55years.Thus,werecommendemphasistobe givenformonitoringofplateletcount,PT,APTTandINRinhospitalizedandadmitted COVID-19patients.
