Dr. A. P. Naren- is a Professor of Medicine with dual appointments in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He is the Director of the burgeoning Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Research Program housed within the Lung Institute at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Naren was born in Coorg, a coffee-growing region located on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats in Southern India. He received PhD a in Biochemistry from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India. He completed his Post-Doctoral training at UAB (Gregory Fleming James Cystic Fibrosis Research Center, Birmingham, Alabama) under Dr. Kevin Kirk’s mentorship, and he later joined the Department of Physiology at the University of Tennessee-Memphis as a faculty member. He was recruited to direct the “Personalized Medicine approaches in Cystic Fibrosis” program at Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center in 2013, and more recently was recruited to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The research in Dr. Naren’s laboratory is primarily focused on developing personalized medicine approaches in CF and defining the cellular and molecular mechanisms of how protein-protein interactions regulate CFTR in health and disease conditions. Dr. Naren has authored more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed, high-impact research journals such as ‘Cell’, ‘Nature’, and ‘Science’ to name a few. His research has been supported by CFF, NIH, AHA, ALA, Vertex, Ironwood Pharma and several other funding agencies. He serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Physiology and is a permanent member of the CFF study section. He has also served as a permanent member of NIH study sections (LCMI and CIMG). He serves on several mentoring and advisory committees. Dr. Naren has been engaged in teaching Graduate, Dental and Medical students. In his career he has trained and mentored several Undergraduate students, Graduate students, Medical students, Medical Fellows and Post-Doctoral fellows.
Growing up, Dr. Naren enjoyed playing cricket, soccer, and field hockey. In his spare time, he likes jogging and hiking.
