Dr. Marianne Muhlebach, MD, is a Professor of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
She obtained her Medical Degree at the University of Vienna, Austria. Subsequent work and training took her to Switzerland where she also completed a doctoral thesis on "Scheduled Antibiotic Therapy in Patients with CF". She completed her Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she is continued as Faculty. Her research interest focuses on cystic fibrosis microbiology, inflammation, and early disease. Initial studies related to protease-antiprotease imbalanced and inflammation in cystic fibrosis lung disease, including studies comparing inflammation in CF and non-CF bronchoalveolar lavage and brush biopsy samples. More recently she has worked on the role of anaerobic bacteria in CF. Specific to this session Dr. Muhlebach has been Principal investigator in several CFF funded multi-center studies related to MRSA epidemiology and treatemteni. First a study examining the molecular epidemiology and clinical outcomes in children with CF, then an interventional, randomized controlled trial for early MRSA infection in CF children and adults. Currently, she is conducting an ongoing early treatment/eradication trial of MRSA. Additionally, she is actively engaged in research related to Infection Prevention and Control for people with CF.
Dr. Muhlebach is a member of the European Respiratory Society, American Thoracic Sociatey and the European CF Society. She has given conference and invited presentations at international meetings and national academic institutions.
