Dr Bruce Schultz is a professor in the Department of Anatomy and Physiology at Kansas State University, where he has conducted epithelial ion transport research for more than twenty years. After receiving degrees in animal science and agricultural economics, he started his research career in a master’s program in veterinary science at the University of Nebraska. Building on this initial work to assess gastric secretion, he went on to pursue a PhD in veterinary medicine in the Department of Pharmacology at Cornell University where he used electrophysiological approaches to assess neural control of intestinal secretion. At the Gregory Fleming James Center for Cystic Fibrosis Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, he completed post-doctoral fellowships supported by the NIH and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in which he assessed kinetics of CFTR gating as regulated by nucleotides and drugs. He then moved to faculty positions first at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and then at Kansas State University. Dr Schultz’ has focused primarily on epithelial ion transport with work focused to describe cellular mechanisms to account for anion secretion and pH modulation in a variety of tissues including airway, intestine, mammary gland and male reproductive tract. This work has been supported by grants from the USDA, NIH, CFF, Kansas State University and private donations.
