Elke De Wachter, MD, PhD is a pediatric pulmonologist and head of the CF centre (children and adults) of the University Hospital Brussels, Belgium (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel, UZ Brussel).
She obtained her degree as a pediatrician in 2003 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and worked since then in the department of pediatric pulmonology in UZ Brussel. She obtained her PhD 'Challenges in making the diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis in the 21st century' in 2017. Since 2018 she is the head of the pediatric pulmonology department, head of the CF clinic at UZ Brussel and Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (faculty of medicine and physiotherapy).
As a part of the ECFS-Clinital Trial Network, she has been PI for more than 10 clinical trials and SI for more than 30 clinical trials. She has more than 35 international peer-reviewed articles as author/co-author.
Elke De Wachter is a board member of the Belgian CF Registry. Between 2016-2019 she was the president of the Belgian CF medical committee. Since 2016 she is a board member of the working group of inherited diseases and was actively involved in the implementation of newborn screening for CF in Flanders. Since 2019 she is the coordinator of the ECFS-Diagnostic Network Working Group (DNWG). The most important aims of this working group are to 1/ achieve pan-European cooperation on definitions of CF and clinical entities of the CF-spectrum 2/ achieve standardization of existing electrophysiological techniques and the development, validation and standardization of new diagnostic technologies 3/ improve and support sweat test facilities and diagnostic challenges in LMIC.
