She received her PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Nottingham, UK and undertook her postdoctoral training at the University of Washington. Her research is focused on mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of diabetes, with a particular focus on novel aspects of pancreatic islet microenvironment that contribute to loss of insulin release. Her ongoing work focuses on elucidating mechanisms underlying islet failure in cystic fibrosis-related diabetes, and on the role of the islet vasculature, islet extracellular matrix and islet amyloid deposition in the development and progression of islet β-cell dysfunction and death.
Dr. Hull-Meichle has been continuously funded by NIH/NIDDK since 2006 and is also supported by the VA and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Dr. Hull-Meichle directs the Cellular and Molecular Imaging Core within the University of Washington’s Diabetes Research Center’s, in addition to serving on numerous editorial and grant review boards.
