Kathryn Akong, MD, PhD, Care Center and Pediatric Program Director, University of California San Diego and Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego.
I grew up in the Caribbean twin island republic of Trinidad & Tobago. I received by BS in Biology at the University of Miami, FL. I graduated from the MD/PhD program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with my PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics, where I studied the effect of oncogenes on cell cytoskeletal dynamics in the fruitfly Drosophila model. Residency training brought me to San Diego, CA, where I did combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego and Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego. I then completed fellowship training at UCSD in Pediatric Pulmonology, where I joined the faculty after a fellowship in the Department of Pediatrics.
I currently serve as the CF Care Center director and the Pediatric CF Program director at UCSD/Rady Children's Hospital. I am also a member of the adult CF care team, and see adults with CF at UCSD. My interests include transition care from pediatrics to adult care models and host-pathogen interactions in the CF lung.
Outside of my professional interests, I am also a wife, mother to 2 daughters and a furry dog son, an avid Peloton devotee, and a beach goer.
