Robert Quinn’s career has spanned several microbiome fields, from fish and corals to lungs and guts. He received his undergraduate degree in microbiology from the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, and his PhD from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he studied bacterial shell disease of the American lobster. After his training in environmental microbiology, Dr. Quinn was inspired to apply this understanding to the lung microbiome in cystic fibrosis. He received the Elisabeth Nash Memorial Postdoctoral fellowship from the Cystic Fibrosis Research Institute in 2012 to work under Forest Rohwer at San Diego State University on the microbiome's role in pulmonary exacerbations. He then received the Vertex CF Innovatotion award to work at the University of California San Diego under the mentorship of Pieter Dorrestein to learn advanced metabolomics methods and apply them to study CF airway infections. In his current faculty position at Michigan State University, Quinn and his team use microbial ecology theory, microbiome sequencing and metabolomics to understand the dynamics of the microbiome in the cystic fibrosis lung, human gut and coral reefs.
