Takafumi Kato, MD is a Research Associate in the Marsico Lung Institute, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Kato earned medical degree from the University of Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan in 2011. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Tokyo Metropolitan Ohtsuka Hospital in 2013 and pulmonary fellowship at Tokyo National Hospital in 2016. He joined Dr. Richard Boucher Lab in UNC CF Center as a postdoctoral fellow in 2017 and has been conducting research on characterization of airway submucosal gland mucus properties in health and cystic fibrosis. He has also been involved in COVID-19-related research including investigation of molecular mechanisms of airway mucin/mucus overproduction in SARS-CoV-2 infection utilizing autopsy tissue specimens and primary airway epithelial cell cultures.
