University of Iowa
Oriana Gema Vanegas Calderon, MD. Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellow (PGY-6). University of Iowa.
I am originally from Venezuela. In 2011, I graduated with honors in research from La Universidad Central de Venezuela- Luis Razetti School of Medicine. In 2013, I joined Dr. Aliye Uc’s laboratory at the University of Iowa. I contributed to the work that resulted in two publications: one describing glycemic abnormalities and insulin secretion defects in newborn pigs with cystic fibrosis and the other one describing an in vitro culture model of pancreatic duct epithelial cells. During my time spent in Dr. Uc’s lab, I became excited about pediatric research and particularly in cystic fibrosis related pancreatic disease and decided to choose pediatric gastroenterology as my future career. In 2017, I matched with the pediatric residency program at the University of Iowa. I had a publication during residency about 30% ethanol locks preventing central line associated bloodstream infections in pediatric intestinal failure. In 2020, I was selected as a fellow in pediatric gastroenterology at the same institution. Currently, I am a third-year pediatric gastroenterology fellow in the Physician Scientist Training Pathway. Following my training, I have a solid interest in pursuing academic career in pediatric gastroenterology with an emphasis on CF.
