Dr. Oates is an Associate Professor in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine in the Heersink School of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), with a secondary appointment in the Division of Preventive Medicine. She is a scientist in the UAB Cystic Fibrosis Research Center, the UAB Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research, the UAB Minority Health & Health Disparities Research Center, and the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science. Dr. Oates is a social scientist (PhD, Medical Sociology) with research training and expertise in the social determinants of health (SDH) and the application of SDH measures, tools, and data for health services, health outcomes, and population health research. She investigates the impact of multi-level sociodemographic and environmental factors on outcomes in cystic fibrosis and other chronic diseases. She has conducted studies that clarify the contributions of race and discrimination for health outcomes across the life course. She has interest in smoking cessation interventions and interventions that support self-management and patient-centered care in cystic fibrosis. Her work is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the CF Foundation, and the Alabama Department of Public Health, among others.
