Dr. Schechter is professor and chief of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond (CHOR) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and he is Director of the VCU Cystic Fibrosis Center, the CHOR Pediatric CF Program and the CHOR Community Asthma Program.
Dr. Schechter’s research has been primarily concerned with environmental and sociodemographic influences as well as the impact of treatment variations on outcomes in Cystic Fibrosis, currently manifest as work on characterizing the role of mental health and equity initiatives. He has also worked with the CF Foundation on fostering methods to improve the quality of care and outcomes for children with CF, and well as organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Initiative for Children’s Healthcare Quality on projects aimed at improving the care of children with a variety of chronic conditions including Spina Bifida, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Sickle Cell Disease, and Asthma. He has most recently become engaged in research to determine the optimal application of community health interventions to improve asthma outcomes in urban children.
Dr. Schechter has been on the faculty of Wake Forest University, Brown University, and Emory University. He has been an invited speaker at a host of national and international conferences, and has an extensive record of published research, reviews, commentaries, edited books and book chapters. He has also served on numerous committees of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, American Thoracic Society, and American Academy of Pediatrics, and is past chair of the AAP Section of Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine.
