Jason Francis is the Health Professions librarian at the Stewart Library and an Associate Professor at Weber State University having obtained a MLS degree from the University of North Texas specializing in Medical Informatics and Digitization and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Weber State University. Jason has worked at the Stewart Library for 28 years in various capacities, such as stacks management, culminating in his current position, which has afforded many interesting opportunities for growth in the library profession. As Stacks Manager, Jason presented at the COSUGI, Customers of SirsiDynix User Group, on the implementation of a then new inventory procedure utilizing the library’s wireless network with the organization of student assistants. That background in student management has led to the focus of his research interests on online engagement in online and face-to-face instruction. As a member of Weber State’s digital literacy task force, Jason has implemented digital assignments into information literacy instruction. Students produce screencast videos highlighting their search strategies and level of understanding of various research tools. Teachable moments become apparent and increased opportunities for interaction have been a successful byproduct of the requirement of these digital artifacts. Jason has pushed into accessibility concerns for online students after working on creating captions for recorded lectures in a course. Jason has forged a partnership between Weber State’s Disability Services office, WSU Online and the Stewart Library to identify and correct inaccessible content as well as educating faculty on copyright issues associated with uploading content online. Jason is working towards ensuring that all students have equal and fair access to course materials at the same time.
