Jane McDaniel joined the faculty of the Yale Physician Assistant Online program in November 2017 as a lecturer and the director of admissions. She currently teaches Diagnostic Studies, Evidence-Based Medicine and Medical Ethics in the Yale PA Online Program. She received a bachelor’s degree in medical technology from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, and a master’s degree in medical education leadership from the University of New England. Jane is certified as a medical laboratory scientist, with an additional certification as a specialist in chemistry from the American Society for Clinical Pathology. She has worked as a medical technologist in hospital laboratories in Huntington, West Virginia; Big Rapids, Michigan; Richmond, Virginia; and Greensboro, North Carolina.
In 1995, Jane began her career in physician assistant education, teaching clinical laboratory medicine in the Wake Forest School of Medicine Physician Assistant (PA) Program. This beginning sparked her enthusiasm for PA education. She went on at Wake Forest to become the course director for the clinical and diagnostic skills course, coordinator of the basic medical skills workshops, facilitator of small groups in the program’s inquiry-based learning curriculum, and student assessment evaluator for simulated patient case scenarios. She was also instrumental in structuring the course curriculum for the Wake Forest PA Program satellite campus at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. In addition to her faculty position, Jane was also the director of admissions for the Wake Forest School of Medicine PA Program for 13 years.
Jane also has served the PA profession on the national level as a member of the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) Recruitment and Admissions Advisory Council for eight years, and as chair of the committee from 2008 to 2013. Most recently, she has served on the PAEA Board of Directors as a director at large from 2015 – 2018, and as secretary since 2019. Jane has authored numerous articles that have been published in the Journal of Physician Assistant Education, the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Clinician Reviews and Medical Science Educator, and has presented at local, state, national and international meetings on clinical laboratory medicine, PA education, and PA admissions topics. She has received numerous teaching and service awards during her career, including the PAEA Outstanding Achievement Award in 2012.
At Yale School of Medicine, Jane was awarded the Winning Poster Award for Excellence in Educational Innovation at the 2018 Yale School of Medicine Medical Education Day for her research poster “Innovative Strategies for Clinical Microscopy Instruction: Virtual versus Light Microscopy”.
Jane’s clinical and academic interests include clinical laboratory medicine and interpretation of laboratory testing, problem-based learning, evidence-based medicine, PA admissions, curriculum design and evaluation, and innovations in online education.
