Pamela M Rose, M.L.S. is the web services and library promotions coordinator at the Health Sciences Library (HSL), University at Buffalo. She currently serves as the liaison to Bioinformatics, is a certified MLA Consumer Health Information specialist level II, serves on the reference and education services team, is the HSL liaison to the University Libraries' Communications Team, oversees creation of exhibits and coordinates travelling exhibits, is the primary contact for donation of books and other materials and maintains the International Donations Program web page to secure donations for needy organizations around the world. During the pandemic, Rose became a volunteer for the Librarian Reserve Corp to assist the World Health Organization in vetting citations for inclusion in their COVID-19 publications database and still screens two days a week for that cause.
Over her fifty-six year career at HSL, Rose worked in technical services in various capacities including head of acquisitions, medical cataloger, and collection development before she was promoted to her current position in 2000. Rose pursued her degrees as she progressed in her profession, receiving a bachelor's in medical anthropology in 1990 and MLS in 1995, dabbling in computer programming, data management and medical information systems, web design, anatomy, and physiology along the way. She is the recipient of the 2021 Western New York Library Council Excellence in Library Service Award.
Rose is a long-time volunteer advocate. She has worked with animals in various capacities for over forty years and currently serves on the board of a local rescue/animal group. She has rescued and fostered cats and dogs, serves as the feline behavior counselor for Pets Alive WNY, helped establish feeding the animals of Meals on Wheels recipients through the AniMeals program of the Buffalo Companion Animal Network, serves as a docent and council member at the Buffalo Zoo, and is the founder of Therapy Animals of Western New York (TAWNY). Rose was instrumental in suggesting and providing therapy dog teams (including her own certified therapy dog) for the University Libraries' "Stress Relief Week," first held in December 2011 and continuing every fall and spring, to help students relax during exams.
Rose is a member of MLA nd serves on the Consumer and Patient Health Information Services, Complementary and Integrative Health, International Cooperation and Sysstematic Reviews caucuses as well as being a member of the Upstate New York and Ontario Chapter of MLA. When not at work, Rose enjoys gardening, cooking and spending time with her husband, Joel, their Bernese mountain dog and certified therapy dog Sophie, five rescue cats, and four grandchildren.
