Francesca (Fran) Cunningham, Pharm. D, is the Associate Chief Consultant, PBM in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Director of the VA Center for Medication Safety (VAMedSAFE). Her primary focus has been dedicated to monitoring agency-wide practices for safe and effective medication use. Her program serves as VA’s comprehensive pharmacovigilance program with a major focus on drug and vaccine safety surveillance assessing the potential risks of new molecular entities or older agents with newly identified adverse events.
Dr. Cunningham sits on several internal and external boards and committees that focus on patient and medication safety with an emphasis on pharmacovigilance (including serving as the VA’s liaison on the FDA Drug Safety Board and CDC ACIP Vaccine Safety Technology Subcommittee). She has focused her research efforts in medication safety and post marketing surveillance and has served as a Principal Investigator on several studies and grants and has approximately 100 publications in the peer-reviewed literature. Her work has led to national awards that focus on contributions in the areas of pharmacovigilance and medication safety. She is the recipient of the Mark A. Wolcott National Award for Leadership in Healthcare: Medication Safety and the Arthur S Fleming Award for her work in Medication Safety.
