Mary Nelson MSN, RN, CPPS is an RN Drug Diversion Specialist for HonorHealth in Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona. Her clinical background includes more than 16 years in critical care nursing before transitioning to the Quality and Patient Safety team where she learned the foundations of event analysis and process improvement. The last five years have been dedicated to the development of the Drug Diversion Prevention Program for HonorHealth. In this position she is responsible for creating policy and improving processes for the surveillance, investigation, response, and reporting of potential drug diversion activities. Mary believes that the primary goal of a drug diversion prevention program is to protect patients, the healthcare workforce, and the organization that serves them.
Mary received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. Later, she received a master’s degree in Nursing Leadership from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. In addition, she is a Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS). Mary remains active with the American Nurses Association, the Arizona Nurses Association, the International Health Facility Diversion Association, and the National Patient Safety Foundation.
Mary is an enthusiastic home cook who shares a passion for an array of outdoor activities with her husband, Kevin. When the summer heats up in Arizona, she enjoys reading, indoor cycling, and entertaining their three cats.
