Dr. Michelle McCarthy is a graduate of Mercer University and completed an ASHP-accredited Drug Information Residency at the University of Pittsburgh. She has practiced at Samford University (1995-1997) and University of Virginia (UVa) Health (1997-2021). At UVA Health, she served as the Pharmacy Education Coordinator and residency program director for the PGY1-Pharmacy (2007-2021) and PGY2-drug information (1998-2017) residency programs. Under her leadership, the UVA PGY1 Pharmacy residency program received a 2015 ASHP Foundation Residency Expansion Grant ($40,000) and the 2017 ASHP Foundation Residency Excellence Program Award. She also served as the residency coordinator for UVA’s 11 other pharmacy residency programs, the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy (VCU SOP)/ UVA Division Director, and managed the drug information/ medication policy service, P&T Committee, infusion pump library/practices, investigational drug services, and benign hematology and infectious diseases clinical pharmacy teams. Her awards include 1997 Samford University SOP Teacher of the Year, 2003 Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists Pharmacist of the Year, 2008 Louis Jeffrey Preceptor of the Year, and 2015 American College of Clinical Pharmacy DI PRN Distinguished Drug Information Practitioner, 2018 VCU SOP Office of Experiential Education Outstanding Service Award, and 2019 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Master Preceptor Recognition. She served on the ASHP Commission on Credentialing from 2008-2013 including serving as the Chair in 2012. In 2021, she transitioned to full-time with Accreditation Services.
