Mabel Baez Schon was born in the Dominican Republic. Mabel obtained her bachelor’s degree at Colgate University in 2015 where she double majored in biology and environmental studies. As an undergraduate student at Colgate University, and after graduation as a staff member at Colgate, Mabel worked in various national and international research projects focusing on ecosystem ecology and sustainability. Research projects ranged from nutrient addition study on canopy epiphytes in La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica to investigation of deer overpopulation issues in the town of Hamilton, New York. Mabel also worked at the Council on International Education Exchange’s (CIEE) program on Sustainability and the Environment in Monteverde Costa Rica. During her doctoral studies, Mabel was the recipient of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and the McKnight Fellowship. Mabel obtained her PhD in forest resources and conservation from the University of Florida in 2022.
