There are many times in the field when we should expect the unexpected. As scientists, we are often excited to start our field research right away, but some basic preparation can prevent us from exposing ourselves to a range of hazards such as poisonous plants, insects, reptiles, heat/cold stress, hazardous materials/chemicals, and unexpected human visitors. I will discuss simple and straightforward ways to keep yourself safe with site specific health and safety planning such as team discussions, having a buddy-system, preparing a medical kit, mapping out the nearest medical facility, and obtaining training to help make your field experience enjoyable, productive, and safe.
