Born and raised in Colorado, Truman Young studied biology at the University of Chicago (B.A. 1975) and the University of Pennsylvania (Ph.D. 1981). Initially focusing on conceptual plant population and evolutionary ecology, for the past 30 years his research has emphasized the ecology, management, and restoration ecology of human-dominated grassland and forest ecosystems. His current research centers around a) ecological contingences in restoration (priority effects, year effects, and site effects in California grasslands), and b) the Kenya Long-term Exclosure Experiment in savanna rangeland.
