Dr. Vaibhav Patel is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Physiology & Pharmacology and the Libin Cardiovascular Institute. Before joining the University of Calgary in 2017, Vaibhav completed his Ph.D. from India in 2011 and then postdoctoral fellowship from University of Alberta. During his postdoctoral training, Vaibhav’s research focused on the role of ACE2 in cardiovascular disease and investigated the potential of enhancing ACE2 as a therapy for cardiovascular disease. ACE2 being the SARS CoV2 receptor, preclinical research work on ACE2 has established a foundation to understanding the impact of COVID19 on cardiovascular health. Notably, the recombinant human ACE2 is currently in clinical trials for cardiovascular disease and is already in Phase 2 trial for Acute Lung Injury.
During his postdoctoral training, Vaibhav received various awards including the University of Alberta translational research fellowship, Dr. Francis Witkowski publication award, AIHS, and Heart and Stroke Foundation postgraduate fellowships, among others.
Vaibhav’s current research program focuses on intercellular communications in heart failure. His lab is also interested in understanding the metabolic basis of aortic aneurysm development. His research is currently funded by CIHR, NSERC, and CFI. Vaibhav has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles in the top-ranked journals in the field of translational cardiovascular sciences, including Nature Communications, Circulation Research, Diabetes, Hypertension, and JMCC, etc.
