Dr Gary Small is an imaging cardiologist and invasive diagnostician at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He qualified from the University of Wales College of Medicine Cardiff in 1996. After completing his internal medicince residency, Dr Small moved to Edinburgh and undertook a successful PhD in medical sciences studying the effects of glucorticoids on angiogenesis in different scenarios including in post myocardial infarction. He continued with research during his cardiology training at the University of Aberdeen deanary, co-supervising MD students in dyssynchrony echocardiography research and a basic science PhD student who undertook angiogenesis studies using LITA grafts and aortic valve samples. Having completed his interventional cardiology training in Scotland, Dr Small came to University of Ottawa Heart Institute to study an advanced cardiac imaging fellowship in cardiac CT, nuclear cardiology and cardiac PET. In 2012 Dr Small was appointed as an associate professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and as in an interventional cardiologist at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital. Here he was also responsible for post graduate medical learners in cardiology at the Thunder Bay campus. Dr Small was recruited back to the Ottawa Heart Institute in 2017 as an imaging cardiologist to pursue specialist interests in cardio-oncology, cardiac amyloid and cardiac imaging research.
