Dr. Haller is a pediatric cardiac surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, and the Director of the Minimally Invasive Congenital Heart Surgery Program. He graduated from Albert-Ludwigs University Freiburg, Germany and completed his cardiac surgery training in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Freiburg, Germany, and the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Tuebingen, Germany. Early in his career, he subspecialized in congenital heart surgery and completed clinical and research fellowships at the Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto.
His practice is focused on open heart surgery in neonates and infants, and adult congenital heart disease, covering the spectrum of congenital heart disease from single ventricle palliation to mechanical support and heart transplantation. The Minimally Invasive Congenital Heart Surgery Program at SickKids has developed minimally invasive strategies for a wide variety of congenital lesions in patients of all ages from infants to adults.
Dr. Haller’s research is focused on the regeneration of cardiac function in pediatric patients using human pluripotent stem cells. He is also developing an artificial placenta system to sustain fetal physiology ex utero, reduce mortality of prematurity, and to make fetuses more accessible to early intervention. He is investigating strategies to mitigate the impact of cardiopulmonary bypass, selective cerebral perfusion, and deep hypothermic arrest on the brain. He is developing new surgical strategies for complex aortic arch reconstruction using computational fluid dynamics and 3D printing techniques.
