Dr. Marc Ruel is Head and Chair of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He received his MD degree from the University of Ottawa in 1994 and his Royal College certification in cardiac surgery in 2000. He then pursued a combined fellowship in minimally invasive surgery and laboratory research at Harvard University, where he also completed a Master’s in Public Health with a focus on quantitative methods.
Dr. Ruel is a Professor in the Department of Surgery and in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Ottawa. A seasoned heart surgeon, innovator and researcher, Dr. Ruel is widely credited with the development of minimally invasive multivessel coronary artery bypass surgery worldwide, and with other minimally invasive cardiac techniques. The laboratory research program founded by Dr. Ruel at the start of his career (www.beatsresearch.com) has also achieved translational impact. During his 10-year leadership, the Cardiac Surgery Division in Ottawa has tremendously grown in volume, surgical quality, research and innovation, advanced peer-to-peer education, and international reputation and impact.
Dr. Ruel has published over 400 scientific papers and 5 books, has led key clinical trials in cardiac surgery, is a recipient of numerous academic and community awards, and is featured among the 'Giants of Cardiothoracic Surgery’. Dr. Ruel is President of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS). Dr. Ruel also serves as Canadian Director of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and as surgical Editor for the journal Circulation.
