Dr Lisa Hornberger is a Professor of Pediatrics and Adjunct Professor within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. Over her career, she has evolved and directed 4 world-class fetal and neonatal cardiology programs (Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard, The Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto, UC San Francisco and more recently University of Alberta beginning 2008). She is recognized internationally for her contributions to the field of fetal and neonatal cardiology and fetal and pediatric echocardiography. She has authored >180 peer-reviewed original research publications and was coauthor of the 1st textbook and manuals in the field. Her research has focused on the prenatal diagnosis, natural evolution, management, and outcome of structural, functional, and rhythm-related cardiovascular disorders detected in utero. More recently, her research has expanded to examine the impact of major CHD on fetal cardiovascular function and the perinatal transition, the impact of early adverse prenatal and neonatal exposures on longer-term cardiovascular health, the role of vascular dysfunction on adverse pregnancy outcomes associated with maternal heart disease, and the impact of socioeconomic status and remoteness of residence on clinical CHD outcomes. Her research incorporates clinical, basic, population and health services pillars facilitated through key collaborations with basic scientists, clinicians from many disciplines and clinical epidemiologists within the University of Alberta. Her contributions to the field of fetal and pediatric echocardiography have led to her being award the American Society of Echocardiography Founder’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease.
