Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

review the factors and contributors to residual risk and the rise in cardiovascular diseases;
discuss the discovery of novel therapies, such as siRNA, and their application for the management and prevention of cardiovascular diseases; and
recognize how therapies can be implemented in clinical systems for the management of CVD patients.

Revolutionary approaches to manage dyslipidemia will play an important role in achieving better treatment outcomes for our patients. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent on R&D for new molecules and technology that remain unused in patients where a disease has a high prevalence, due to inertia in the healthcare system, clinical practice, and lack of patient advocacy. New technologies are embraced in rare diseases, by both the governmental structures and physicians, but not in common diseases such as CVD, although it is responsible for far more death and hospitalizations. The system is prime for a reset, and with a CVD pandemic on the horizon, now is the time to look at implementing novel approaches to secondary prevention of CVD.

This event is an accredited Group Learning Activity under Section 1 as defined by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada for the Maintenance of Certification program and has been approved by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. This program was co-developed with the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and was planned to achieve scientific integrity, objectivity and balance.
