Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

identify the sex and gender determinants of vascular disease;
describe how sex and gender effects on vascular disease may differ in different locations internationally;
list ways in which androgen hormones and immune factors participate in mediating sex determinants of vascular disease; and
describe how and why to use women-focused programs to optimize cardiac rehabilitation.

There has been widespread interest in sex and gender related cardiovascular disease differences, but much less attention paid to the mechanisms that explain these differences. This session deals with the mechanisms underlying sex and gender specific manifestations and management of vascular disease. Topics to be covered deal with global considerations in understanding sex and gender determinants and clues from geographic specificity, with the basic mechanisms that lead to sex and gender specific concerns at the level of immune system functioning and androgen system influences, and finally the importance of developing specific systems to allow for cardiac rehabilitation programs to deal with the particular needs of women with heart disease. This session will have a translational and practical focus that will be of interest to medical professionals and researchers interested in how and why there are sex and gender specific elements to vascular disease, why they are so important and what the practical consequences are for clinical management.
