Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

use international standardized criteria to diagnose vaccine myocarditis, COVID-19 myocarditis, and MIS-C myocarditis;
identify key knowledge gaps in the management and follow-up of patients with myocarditis;
indicate when and how to report events following vaccination;
describe the scope and breadth of the CCS surveillance study on mRNA COVID-19 vaccine myo/pericarditis and how to refer your patients; and
locate key resources for additional information on vaccine myocarditis in Canada.

Most cases of myocarditis and pericarditis after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination are mild and self-limiting; however, the longer-term effects are currently unknown. This knowledge gap can impact confidence in vaccines, particularly for young adults and children. In this context, the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) will conduct a pan-Canadian surveillance study on the longer-term outcomes of adults and children who have experienced myocarditis and/or pericarditis after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination, COVID-19 infection, and Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children and Adults (MIS-C/A). The CCS will collaborate with clinicians, researchers, research networks, patients, and public health authorities throughout Canada for this project. Integral to this initiative will be CCS membership engagement and recruitment of cardiac care centres from across Canada to be study sites. This session will introduce this important initiative to the Canadian cardiovascular community. We will review diagnostic criteria for vaccine myocarditis/pericarditis and COVID-19 myocarditis using an illustrative clinical vignette. The public health context and pathways for adverse event reporting will be described, and participants will have the opportunity to explore ways of engaging in the project. The key leadership role of the CCS in all phases of this study will be discussed including proposal development, study oversight, communications and knowledge translation activities.
