Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

examine the pathophysiology that causes a prothrombotic state in patients with concomitant AF and CKD;
evaluate current treatment options for patients with AF and severe renal impairment; and,
analyze the most recent data evaluating renal outcomes in patients with AF treated with oral anticoagulants.

Managing anticoagulation in patients with moderate to advanced renal disease and atrial fibrillation is a priority, as patients with advanced renal disease also present a higher risk for stroke. Renal outcomes in this patient population are an important consideration and must be balanced with stroke prevention. Ongoing studies of NOACs in patients with AF and moderate to advanced renal disease may shed light on the net clinical benefits of certain NOACs.
