Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

optimize the use of contrast during a stress echo and highlight common technical problems and provide potential solutions;
illustrate the applications of stress echo in coronary artery disease beyond wall motion assessment (hemodynamics, perfusion imaging) and the role of stress echo in the assessment of valvular heart disease to optimize risk stratification; and
demonstrate the strategies to enhance valvular image acquisition during dynamic imaging and highlight pearls and potential pitfalls.

Stress echo techniques have evolved considerably for the diagnosis and prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) and valvular heart disease (VHD). The use of contrast during stress echo and stress echo protocols for VHD can provide important additional clinical insight into the diagnosis and prognosis of common cardiac conditions. The goal of this hands-on workshop is to allow participants to learn how to integrate these more advanced, but still relatively simple, techniques during stress echo in the assessment of CAD and VHD.

The duration of the workshop will be 45 minutes divided in three parts. Part A, will address the use of contrast agents during stress echo in CAD and part B, the practical application of stress echo in VHD patients (12-min each). In both parts, the first speakers will explain why those advanced techniques are useful in clinical practice (improving accuracy, additional prognostic information) and the second speaker will demonstrate how to optimize those techniques highlighting common technical problems and providing potential solutions using pre-recorded videos. Part C (20 mins), will include live demonstrations and the possibility of a real hands-on experience for participants on-site. The live demonstration will be guided by questions from the audience to promote interaction. An echo machine, an ergocycle, a healthy volunteer as well as experienced cardiologists and sonographers will be available. This proposal has the full support of the Canadian Society of Echocardiography. Members of the planning committee and speakers have been chosen to provide balance in gender, generation and geography and include community and academic cardiologists, a trainee and two sonographers.
