Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

understand the complexities of hypertension management in women;
understand the indications and contraindications of menopausal hormonal therapy in light of a woman's cardiovascular risk; and
estimate a woman's future cardiovascular risk with the understanding of risk modifiers and risk calculators.

Assessment and management of cardiovascular risk in women are complex, and often inaccurate when based on conventional risk assessment tools. Further, hypertension, which is the principal risk factor for death and disability worldwide, is more prevalent in older women than men and poses additional therapeutic challenges in women. Lastly, the management of menopausal symptoms in women requires a delicate balance between symptom relief and control of cardiovascular risk. Our proposed core curriculum session aims to address these important nuances of cardiovascular risk assessment and management in women, allowing clinicians to refine their practices and help their female patients identify and minimize their cardiovascular risk.
