Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

identify safe procedural sedation strategies in patients with common cardiovascular conditions;
communicate important operative clinical variables to a cardiac anesthesiologist performing pre-operative consultation;
integrate a simple airway exam into clinical practice to help identify difficult airways in patients with respiratory failure;
critically appraise the literature supporting critical care sedation practices that may may help reduce the risk of delirum; and
incorporate cardiac sedation practices in the CICU or CSICU that may help reduce mechanical ventilation time.

The workshop with have 5 short 7 minute evidence-based presentation that each focus on a unique aspects of cardiac sedation. The first Speaker Dr Janek Senaratne (Intensive Care, Grey Nun's Hospital, Community Representative) will discuss 'Practical tips and pitfalls of procedural sedation in patients with cardiovascular disease'. Dr Rob Chen (Anesthesiology, Ottawa Heart) will present 'Cardiac anaesthesia: what a referring cardiologist needs to know.' This will focus on what a referring clinical cardiologist needs to know and communicate to an anesthesiologist in a pre-operative consult. Dr Kendra Derry (Anesthesiology, Queen's) will present 'Airway assessment: when to call for help.' Dr Rakesh Arora (University of Manitoba, Cardiac Surgery/Critical Care) will discuss ' ICU based sedation regimens to reduce delirium: fact or fiction' while Dr Emilie Belley-Cote (McMaster, Critical Care/Cardiology) willl present an evidence- based on 'Cardiac sedation practices in the CICU that reduce mechanical ventilation time.'

At the end of the talk a 10 min panel discussion that will include trainee representatives will be lead by the co-chairs and directed by ARS and in person questions.
