Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

describe how the hemodynamic changes of pregnancy impact cardiac disease in pregnancy;
describe five key take away messages on the topic of valvular heart disease in pregnancy;
quantify disparities in access to care and innovation across Canada;
describe five key take away messages on the topic of ischemic heart disease in pregnancy; and
describe five key take away messages on the topic of heart failure in pregnancy.

The number of women of childbearing age with heart disease continues to grow driven by advancing maternal age with associated co-morbidites including hypertension or diabetes and acquired cardiovascular disease as well as the increased survival of children with congenital heart disease and other childhood cardiac conditions.

Over the last 10 years the field of Cardio-Obstetrics has advanced significantly with improvements in our understanding of pregnancy risks, disease pathogenesis and treatment options. Risk stratification has significantly improved due to a better understanding of the impact of pregnancy on specific cardiac conditions in addition to the development of risk prediction tools such as the Canadian Cardiac Disease in Pregnancy (CARPREG) risk score. In addition there is the realization that optimal care to this unique patient group should be delivered via a multidisciplinary Cardio-Obstetric Program.

The Canadian Cardiovascular Society published its first position statement on the topic in December 2021. This workshop is comprised of the co-chairs and two of the writes of this recent document and they will highlight key features from the position statement that the general cardiologist should be aware of.

The workshop will adopt an interactive approach to highlight these key topics and to deliver the material in an engaging format to enhance the learning of the participants.
