Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

described the indications, advantages and limitations of transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography in the assessment of patients with IV drug use, with suspected and definite infective endocarditis;
describe the utility of cardiac CT and FDG-PET in the evaluation of patients with infective endocarditis;
outline the approach to antibiotic therapy for the management of infective endocarditis in the setting of patients with IV drug use;
list the indications for cardiac surgery in the management of patients with infective endocarditis, in the setting of IV drug use;
summarize the role of addictions medicine in the management of patients with infective endocarditis in the setting of IV drug use; and
describe the role of the endocarditis team in the management of patients with IV drug use and infective endocarditis.

The Canadian Society of Echocardiography (CSE) is offering a Spotlight Session focusing on management dilemmas in intravenous drug users with endocarditis. This session will focus on the complex issues surrounding the diagnosis, investigations, as well as short- and long-term management of intravenous drug users with endocarditis. This session will cover type and timing of imaging, antibiotic management, indications for cardiac surgery and issues surrounding addiction medicine. The role of the endocarditis team will be highlighted and the general approach to care of these patients will be explored through a multidisciplinary panel.
