Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

recognize how to titrate medical therapy for patients with heart failure;
describe common myths for heart failure therapies; and
apply evidence-based guidelines to the care of patients with heart failure.

This 60-min session will review five heart failure “myths”, formatted as 10-min consultations with the community cardiologist. Each topic will include a 5-min case discussion, followed by a 5-min Q&A of audience-solicited questions using the platform directed to the session panelists. The introduction will include a short poll of the audience’s perspectives on each topic, and the concluding remarks will highlight key take-home messages (total 10 min).

We will tackle several situations commonly asked in consultation, including but not limited to:
1. I am having trouble adequately diuresing this patient. The creatinine is rising. Can you help?
2. I'm wondering whether or not I should send my patient to cardiac rehabilitation. Is there any evidence that this works?
3. My patient is on some doses of the GDMT but I'm wondering if I really need to go up on the doses and if I need to change some of their drugs like their beta blocker to what is recommended in the guidelines. What if they get hyperkalemia on their MRA?
4. My patients are rather elderly - do I really need to use the GDMT and devices recommended?
5. I have a patient who is short of breath but the BNP is borderline - is it HF? The physical exam is mixed - does the physical exam matter anymore?
