Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

identify the key climate change mechanisms that adversely affect the cardiovascular system;
recognize the most impactful climate change advice cardiovascular specialists can give to their patients to prevent cardiovascular disease/events; and
contribute to the CCS’s climate change action plan.

Climate Change/Planetary illness, in particular air pollution, increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, patients with cardiovascular (CV) disease are at higher risk of cardiovascular events during severe climate change events.

In this practical and interactive session, experts in climate health and cardiovascular disease will answer the following questions:
1) Why is climate change a cardiovascular health issue? How does climate change increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular events?
2) What can CV specialists do in their professional practice to reduce the climate and environmental impact of the health care system and improve the cardiovascular health of Canadians through climate change initiatives? What works? What doesn’t work? What initiatives are most impactful?
3) What advice should CV specialists give to patients in regards to air pollution and other climate change sequelae to prevent CV disease? What advice should be given to patients with CV disease on days with high air particulate levels (“bad air days”) or during temperature extremes?
4) What can each of us do in our own daily lives to make a difference?
5) What is the CCS doing as an organization to promote climate action? CCS Update: In addition, we will update the audience regarding the initiatives enacted by the CCS and the climate change working group regarding climate change advocacy, minimizing air travel for CCS meetings and making Congress more green.
