Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

identify obesity as a risk factor for AF recurrence after AF ablation and to target actions that improve outcome in this population;
demonstrate the benefits of AF ablation in patients with AF and heart failure or reduced ejection fraction; and
propose AF ablation as a first line therapy in selected populations.

The workshop "AF ABLATION: WILL MY OBESE / HEART FAILURE OR DE NOVO PATIENT BENEFIT FROM SUCH THERAPY?
will include 3 case-based presentations and cover the following topics:
1) Obesity and AF ablation
2) Heart failure and AF ablation
3) AF ablation as first line therapy
Generally, there is a limited appreciation of a rational approach to catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation. This workshop will fulfill the learning needs of those seeking a comprehensive overview of novel recommendations for catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation. To consider catheter ablation as the treatment strategy for a patient can be difficult and guidelines have evolved to expand indications for ablation. Clinical scenarios like those addressed in this workshop are a frequent challenge to all involved in the clinical management of patients. This workshop will provide participants with a comprehensive and practical approach to patient selection for atrial fibrillation catheter ablation in higher risk populations such as obese and heart failure patients. Workshop participants will also learn outcome to be expected after catheter ablation and how to improve this outcome by controlling risk factors. Finally, it will update participants on patient selection for first line catheter ablation therapy for atrial fibrillation.
Members of this committee include community and academic cardiologists, electrophysiologists, cardiology residents and allied professionals from diverse practices and experience across Canada. The education committee is composed of representatives from each of the following regions: British Colombia, Prairies, Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic Provinces.
