Dr. Andrea Obi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan. She holds degrees in Microbiology & Immunology and English Literature from the University of Michigan, and an M.D. from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. She completed general surgery residency in at The University of Michigan, during which time she completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Vascular Biology in the Conrad Jobst Vascular Laboratories. She then completed an additional clinical fellowship in vascular surgery at the University of Michigan. Dr. Obi’s laboratory focuses on dissecting molecular mechanisms involved in venous thrombus (VT) resolution. Her clinical practice is comprised of general peripheral vascular surgery including aortic, carotid, dialysis and lower extremity endovascular and open operations, with an emphasis in treating venous disease. She is co-director of the Venous Health Program, a multidisciplinary clinic that treats patients with rare congenital anomalies, venous thromboembolism, advanced chronic venous insufficiency, and pelvic congestion syndrome. She is co-director of the institutional Venous Thromboembolism Committee, aimed at implementing best practices to reduce hospital acquired VTE. On a national level she is the chair of the American Venous Forum Research Committee and serves on the writing group for the multi-society (SVS/AVF/AVLS) venous treatment guidelines. Her basic science laboratory is funded by the NIH NHLBI and her translational work in pioneering new devices has been funded by multiple industrial partners. Among other distinctions she received the 2019 Vascular Cures Wylie Scholar Award and the 2020 SVS Foundation Mentored Research Career Development Award.
