Introduction, Objectives, and/or Purpose: A prospective multi-centered randomized control cross-over clinical study to evaluate a non-pneumatic compression device (NPCD) in contrast to an advanced pneumatic compression device (APCD).

Methods: 52 subjects with breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) were enrolled across six sites. Subjects were randomized to receive home treatment with either the NPCD or the APCD. Limb volume, LYMQOL, and adherence to daily therapy were measured.

Results: Subjects were nearly all female. At the final analysis, subjects were found to have greater adherence with NPCD (95.6%) in comparison to APCD use (49.8%). Subjects also demonstrated a greater mean reduction in edema volume with NPCD (63.3%) vs. with APCD (27.7%). Additionally, greater mean improvements in LYMQOL scores and significantly greater satisfaction with the device (90% vs. 14%) were observed.

Conclusion(s): The non-pneumatic active compression device (NPCD) was found to be an effective maintenance treatment for reducing limb volume in subjects with BCRLs. The device was found to be more effective than an APCD and resulted in higher adherence and greater satisfaction
