Presentation Description: Nationwide, mental health crisis has overwhelmed the 911 system. With limited training and limited resources, our 911 dispatchers are faced with doing the impossible: protecting public health and public safety at the same time. The projected outcomes for those experiencing a mental health crisis while calling 911 are not favorable. 988, a new national number designed just for mental health was implemented to alleviate the load on the 911 system and produce better outcomes for those experiencing mental health crisis. But what does 988 mean for 911? How will it work and what will it take for successful implementation?
Learning Objectives:
Participants will define the purpose and function of 988 and how it differs from 911.
Participants will identify the 3 different types of mobile crisis response styles and examine the benefits or drawbacks to each.
Participants will be able to demonstrate how 911 differs from 988 yet what steps are necessary from 911 to make 988 successful.
