Supervisors in Transition: Navigating Moments of Change as a Manager and Leader

New supervisors are supported in their roles in a variety of ways. Books and webinars are written directly for them, they are targets for mentoring, and there is acknowledgment that this is a stage during which new skills must be gained. However, what supervisors know doesn’t stop after they are no longer brand new; instead, as supervisors grow in their careers, their needs change. This session delves into one aspect of the supervisor’s career path: how to handle the transition from leading your first (or current team) to a new team in a different environment as a middle manager.

This session will look at a few different common scenarios: leaving one organization for another as a supervisor in both, switching teams you lead inside a single organization, and switching the context or level of your leadership within an organization. This session will have a dual focus: looking back on past successes and challenges as preparation for your new role and looking forward to the opportunities that new leadership provides. While based in the panel’s personal theories of leadership, this session will focus on practical tips and tools that supervisors can put into practice immediately.

The panelists for this session have all undergone their own changes during the last two years (with all the special challenges incumbent upon that). This panel will be a dialogue to share experiences and best practices to improve supervision, management, and leadership for all those in new middle management roles.
