Freedom Lifted
Mia Henry (she |her) is the founder and CEO of Freedom Lifted, a consulting firm that supports social justice leadership development through specialized facilitation, online education, and coaching. She has more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit management, youth development, intergenerational community organizing, and civic and history education.
Born and raised in the U.S. Deep South, Mia is the daughter of Civil Rights activists. Her mother desegregated her junior high school in Alabama in the 1960s and participated in civil disobedience after being trained in Project C. Mia grew up learning about Civil Rights history not only in school, but from her parents and extended family in Alabama.
Prior to devoting herself full time to Freedom Lifted, Mia served as the Executive Director of the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership at Kalamazoo College which provides education and capacity-building to activists of all ages. She was the founding director of the Chicago Freedom School, a nonprofit organization that provides political education for young people and the adults supporting youth-led social change. She has worked across the U.S. building relationships with black community organizers through Safe Places for the Advancement of Community and Equity (SPACEs).
Mia has been a lecturer and staff administrator in higher education, a high school history teacher and an coordinator for the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. Her clients have included several organizations including Press On, the Public Library Association, and Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation (TRHT) Michigan. Mia earned her B.S. from Rutgers University and her M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania.
