Kimberly Johnson entered the profession as coordinator of the African American Resource Center at the Tulsa City-County Library in 1998 and ascended to CEO in 2017. She held seven positions in 24 years including chief innovation officer and chief operating officer. Johnson was instrumental in customizing library buildings to meet the demands of 21st-century users and she led the library through a new customer-centered service model that focused on providing convenience and removing barriers to service.
Johnson, the first African American CEO in the library’s history, leads the largest library system in the state with over 400 employees and 24 public locations in 10 cities. She also initiated TCCL’s equity, diversity, and inclusion strategic plan. TCCL’s initiatives are anchored in a strong staff culture for which Johnson sets the example.
