Dean of Learning Resources, Special Assistant to the President for Leadership Development

Earl Givens, Jr. is the Dean of Learning Resources and Special Assistant to the President for Leadership Development at Catawba College. Always on the cutting edge of technology, Givens is involved in library projects that transform academic libraries for the 21st century and beyond. Elected to the OCLC Global and Regional Council in 2019, Givens serves as the Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect of the Americas Regional Council and Vice-Chair of the Global Council where he collaborates with libraries globally to foster change worldwide.
In regards to research, Givens worked closely with the local county and institutional archives to develop a 21st-century approach to archival practices and community engagement. That archival partnership led Givens to conduct innovative research in augmented/mixed/virtual reality and its implementation in higher education, museums, archives, and art galleries. Additionally, Givens serves as a leadership/development coach and trainer for nonprofit organizations in the state of North Carolina. His hobbies include playing golf, boxing, jazz piano, guitar, and gaming.
Givens earned both his undergraduate degree in American History, emphasizing Museums Studies, and his Masters of Library Science and Technology M.L.S. from Emporia State University. Additionally, Givens holds a MicroMasters in Instructional Design and Technology, professional certifications in Information Technology, and did post-graduate work at Harvard in Adaptive Leadership. Moreover, Givens is a professionally trained leadership coach and consultant with the John Maxwell Group where he has collaborated to provide leadership and diversity training to non-profit organizations, faith-based organizations, and the community.
