Dr. Bharat Mehra is EBSCO Endowed Chair in Social Justice and Professor in the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alabama. His research focuses on diversity and social justice in library and information science and community informatics or the use of information and communication technologies to empower minority and underserved populations to make meaningful changes in their everyday lives. He has applied action research to further engaged scholarship while collaborating with racial/ethnic groups, international diaspora, sexual minorities, rural communities, low-income families, small businesses, and others, to represent their experiences/perspectives in the design of community-based information systems/services. He has served as principal investigator on several past grants funded for over a million dollars by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to conduct impact-driven, action-oriented, and community-engaged research with rural libraries in the Appalachian region to further their capacity in economic development and sustainable growth. Currently he is leading three IMLS grants with various partners for more than $1.2 million on civic engagement and racial justice, training of BIPOC community-embedded social justice archivists, and co-development of a professional learning program for public librarians to support diverse children and their families in math education.
