Jacob Powell (Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, Ngāti Whātua) is a Team Leader with the Cultural Collections unit of Te Tumu Herenga | Libraries and Learning Services at Waipapa Taumata Rau | The University of Auckland, with responsibility for audiovisual archives and, more recently, the University Art Collection. He has overseen the development of the TV and Radio streaming service, providing easy access and research support for University of Auckland staff and students as well as iwi, hapū, and whānau (Māori stakeholders) to a rich broadcast media repository (over 220,000 recordings dating from the mid-1960s to today, including the Chapman Archive of news and current events, and extensive Māori television archives).
A longstanding member of Te Pou Rāhui (Te Tumu Herenga’s Māori staff network), Jacob has contributed to a range of projects and initiatives helping to embed our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi) partnership into everyday work, such as development of ‘He Kaupapa Mahi: Māori Guidelines’; spearheading the ‘Te Tumu Herenga’ rebrand proposal; driving the institution of a permanent Kaiārahi (Māori leader) role in the Te Tumu Herenga leadership team; as well as developing and delivering various te reo and tikanga Māori (Māori language and protocols) training for all staff.
Jacob also moonlights as a film reviewer and has been communicating on cinema-related topics online and occasionally in print and on radio since 2005.
