Melissa Stoner is Diné/Navajo. She grew up on the Navajo Nation in New Mexico before graduating from UNLV (BA) and from San Jose State University (MLIS). Melissa’s professional passions are digitizing archival collections and creating metadata. As the Native American Studies Librarian at UC Berkeley, Melissa co-chaired the Native American Collections in Archives, Libraries, and Museums Task Force, which resulted in an influential report. She also served on the campus NAGPRA Committee and the campus digital collections Ethics Workflow Committee. Melissa serves on the Society of American Archivists - Native American Archives Section and the ALA International Relations - Americas Subcommittee. She has consulted for two biannual campus summer intensive trainings - the Breath of Life native language revitalization program and the Native American Museums Study Institute. Her research focuses on the digitization practices of historical and ethnographic materials that contain culturally sensitive information.
