Digital Transformation in the Time of the Pandemic - or how Sacramento Public Library Managed Major Change Management in Adverse Circumstances

Managing wholesale organizational change is challenging in the best of times. When that change includes upending every preconceived notion staff and the public have about every aspect of managing collections, the outcome will be brutal or brilliant.
The panel will report on the decisions and actions behind preparation, training and implementation of North America’s first installation of Intelligent Materials Management System with goals of sustainability (paperless holds), efficient operations and exceptional, unbiased floating collections.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Participants will learn and understand the basics of the next generation of materials management systems. 2. Participants will analyze the challenges of migrating to a system that is unique among North American Libraries and develop strategies for implementation. 3. Participants will comprehend and be able to apply the principles of systemwide change management.
Lisa Dale Lisa Dale has 35 years in public and state libraries, currently serving as Collection Services Manager for Sacramento Public Library. She has had many roles, managing staff, collections and services to meet diverse community needs. Lisa is passionate about change management and using data to support library operations and create new programs and services. Lisa makes things happen with limited resources, works with the customer in mind uses data to create new and meaningful services.
Helle Lauridsen Helle Lauridsen is the product owner and manager of Lyngsoes Systems’ Intelligent Material Management System. Helle has a long history in the library world starting out as a chemistry librarian at Aarhus University followed by an international career within integrated library systems and library content, from which she brings in knowledge and understanding from both user and provider side.
Rivkah Sass Rivkah Sass holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Washington and is Library Director/CEO of Sacramento Public Library, the first public library in the United States to receive the Gerald M. Kline Community Impact Prize (2019). A 40-year veteran of public libraries, Rivkah was Library Journal’s 2006 Librarian of the Year, 2018 University of Washington iSchool Distinguished Alumna and was the 2020 recipient of PLA’s Charlie Robinson Award.
